Josef Gunkel (born December 28, 1802 in Vienna , † July 2, 1878 in Vienna) was an Austrian master tailor .

biography

The company was founded in 1796 by Johann Gunkel as a linen goods dealer and court clothing maker and was located at Vienna Graben No. 1144 as well as in the Hungarian Pest at Theaterplatz “beym golden elephants”. In 1837 it moved to Tuchlauben 11 in downtown Vienna .

His son Josef Gunkel was the most distinguished representative of his trade in Biedermeier Vienna , the creator of Viennese men's fashion and a European legend. He employed about 80 to 100 people, masters and journeymen. His tremendous creative talent paired with business acumen made him a household name for all of Europe. Gunkel had studied anatomy and was making clay models to work on. He owned a large collection of paintings and encouraged young painters. He was called the tailor of the court councilors. Even Franz Josef I had made civilian clothes in his studio. Even as a knight of the Franz Joseph Order , he still remained the “bourgeois master tailor”.

Helmuth von Moltke wrote in a letter to his mother in 1835: “Gunkel is the first notability among the clothing manufacturers who are otherwise called tailors.” He is also mentioned by Johann Nestroy in “Torn”: “I have 14 suits, partly light and partly dark. The tailcoat and the pantalon all from Gunkel. "

Theodor Gunkel & Comp.

His successor was his son Theodor Gunkel, and since 1873 the company has been called “Theodor Gunkel & Comp.”. He continued the business as a linen, bedding and equipment salon, which is still there today.
