Josef Hafner (politician)

Josef Hafner (born February 8, 1875 in Mattighofen , † March 4, 1932 in Bad Ischl ) was an Austrian teacher and politician ( SPÖ ).

After attending the lower secondary school and the teacher training institute, Hafner was a teacher or senior teacher in Stadl-Paura and Kleinmünchen , but was politically active at an early stage. From 1909 to 1914 he was a member of the state parliament for the Social Democratic Party ( XI. Electoral period ), 1918/1919 a member of the Upper Austrian provisional provincial assembly and until his death in 1932 a member of the state government ( XII. , XIII. And XIV. Electoral period ), for the last two years Governor -Stellvertreter. Among other things, he led the agendas of sanitary and community affairs, hydraulic engineering and regulations, the state library and the state archive. Hafner was not an excellent speaker, but a recognized politician and respected by his political opponents. With his humor he often succeeded in smoothing out the sometimes high waves. He also worked as a journalist and wrote numerous plays.

Apart from his work in the state parliament and state government, Hafner was also active in other areas. He was municipal councilor of Kleinmünchen, 1920 a member of the State Railway Council , from March 4, 1919 to November 25, 1920 a member of the National Council (in the constituent National Assembly and in the first legislative period ), then from December 1, 1920 to the 2. July 1925 member of the Federal Council ( 1st and 2nd legislative period ). He was also a member of the state school council , chairman of the state group of the socialist teachers' association and a member of the presidium of the state chamber of teachers .
