Josef Kalenberg

Josef Kalenberg ( January 7, 1886 in Cologne - November 8, 1962 in Vienna ) was a German-Austrian opera singer ( tenor ) and a long-time member of the Vienna State Opera . At this house he was also appointed chamber singer .

Life

Kalenberg performed at the Vienna State Opera from 1927 to 1950 , where he was also appointed chamber singer . In the Haus am Ring he sang 38 times the Caliph in Turandot and 26 times the Pedro in Tiefland . Kalenberg sang almost all of Wagner's great hero tenor roles ( Siegfried, Parsifal, Erik, Stolzing and Lohengrin ), as well as the classical Italian and French repertoire ( Macduff , Gustav III , Radames , Canio , Turridu , Cavaradossi , Don José and Samson ). He was also a sought-after Richard Strauss interpreter and took over the tenor roles in Salome , Ariadne , Arabella and Elektra . In the easy subject he embodied Alfred and Orpheus .

At the Salzburg Festival in 1928 Kalenberg sang Tamino and from 1928 to 1930 Florestan , in 1930 also Achilles in Iphigénie en Aulide and in 1935 and 1936 Tristan .

Kalenberg was buried at the Hietzinger Friedhof in Vienna.
