Josef Krug-Waldsee (born November 8, 1858 in Waldsee as Josef Krug; † October 8, 1915 in Magdeburg ) was a conductor and composer .

Live and act

Due to his talent, he passed the entrance examination at the Royal Conservatory for Music Stuttgart at the age of fourteen ; Here he received music lessons in violin, piano, singing and composition from 1872 to 1880. From 1882 he was the music director of the Neuer Singverein choir . At the same time, he took over the management of the Liederkranz Academy at the Stuttgart Technical University from 1885 to 1887 .

His choral work König Rother , premiered in 1887, brought him fame and was also performed internationally as his most famous work. Even then he called himself Krug-Waldsee to distinguish himself from the Hamburg composers Dietrich and Arnold Krug , who were not related to him , with reference to his place of birth.

From 1889 to 1892 Krug-Waldsee led the choir of the Hamburg City Theater . As Kapellmeister in Brno (1892/93), Nuremberg (1894 and 1899–1901) and Augsburg (1896) he demonstrated talent for management. In 1901, after a successful rehearsal of the Liszt Mazeppa, he was appointed director of the symphony concerts of the Magdeburg Municipal Orchestra and director of the teachers' choir in Magdeburg, where he succeeded Fritz Kauffmann until his retirement in January 1915. Here he also founded the Krug women's choir. The huge ensemble he assembled from these two choirs brought him professional recognition and in 1905 the title of music director and finally, at the end of 1912, the title of professor.
