Josef Liebermann
Josef Liebermann (also Joseph; born June 14, 1783 in Märkisch Friedland ; died January 29, 1860 in Berlin ) was a German entrepreneur.
Josef Liebermann moved from his hometown to Berlin in 1823 and founded a textile company with his brothers. In 1825 he joined the Society of Friends , an association that campaigned for the emancipation of German Jewry and provided mutual support in emergencies.
He was the first Prussian to build machines for the production of calico fabrics, thereby breaking the British monopoly . All kinds of machines were built in Liebermann's factory in Sprottau in Lower Silesia , the Wilhelmshütte with blast furnace and rolling mill acquired in 1853 .
Josef Liebermann was married to Marianne Callenbach (1792–1864); he was the grandfather of the industrialist Emil Rathenau , the painter Max Liebermann and the chemists Carl Liebermann and Willy Liebermann von Wahlendorf .
