Josef Linhoff (born March 12, 1819 in Arnsberg , † September 27, 1893 in Münster ) was a Prussian civil servant.

Life

He was the son of the hotel and ironworks owner Linhoff. He attended the Laurentianum grammar school and then studied law and political science in Bonn and Berlin . He worked as a trainee lawyer at the Arnsberg Regional Court and had been a government assessor in Minden since 1845 . In the years 1849/50 he was a member of the second chamber of the Prussian state parliament for the constituency of Höxter and Warburg . There he joined the Harkort faction. Linhoff was married to Aurelia Freiin von Exterde-Haselüne since 1853. From 1854 he was a councilor.

From 1859 he worked in the Prussian Ministry of Culture . There he belonged to the Catholic department responsible for relations with the Catholic Church. In 1866 he was appointed lecturing councilor. During this time he enjoyed the trust of both the state and the church. He saw his job as an intermediary activity.

During the Kulturkampf , however, he came into conflict with Otto von Bismarck . This saw in Linhoff's statements on the monastery law a service offense and wanted to dismiss Linhoff. The State Ministry as a whole has contradicted this. After the dissolution of the Catholic department in 1871, he was the only Catholic to remain active in the Ministry of Education because his superiors valued his legal knowledge and experience. In 1873 he was appointed a secret councilor. He left the service only in 1890, although ill for a long time, with the rank of Real Secret Government Councilor. He was friends with numerous personalities in Catholic Germany such as Ludwig Windthorst and Archbishop Paulus Melchers .
