Life

Josef Rest attended grammar school in Ettenheim, where he graduated from high school in 1904. In 1909 he passed the state examination for higher teaching post. At the beginning of 1909 he began his work as a volunteer at the Freiburg University Library , where he became a scientific assistant in 1909, curator in 1917 and librarian in 1919; its activity was interrupted from 1915 to 1918 by military service in the First World War. During the Second World War , Rest caused large parts of the holdings of the university library to be relocated without major restrictions on use. As a result, almost the entire inventory of the library remained intact, although the building suffered considerable damage. In 1945 he was appointed honorary professor for book and library history at the University of Freiburg in gratitude for his services to the library.

In 1949 Josef Rest became an honorary citizen of his home community Münchweier, in 1952 he received the Federal Cross of Merit , in 1954 he became a corresponding member of the Commission for historical regional studies in Baden-Württemberg .
