Josef Riederer

Josef Riederer (born December 29, 1939 in Munich ; † June 3, 2017 ) was a German archaeometer and archaeometallurgist . He was an expert in the scientific investigation of archaeological finds and works of art and for many years was head of the Rathgen research laboratory of the State Museums in Berlin .

Life

Riederer attended elementary school in Großhadern ; In 1958 he graduated from the Klenze secondary school in Munich. From 1958 to 1964 Riederer studied geology at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität : in 1962 he obtained his diploma, in 1964 he received his doctorate. rer. nat. After that he was a research assistant at the "Institute for Geology" of the LMU Munich until 1966, and from 1967 he was a research assistant at the Doerner Institute for scientific investigation and conservation of works of art in the Bavarian State Painting Collections in Munich.

From 1974 until his retirement in 2004 he was director of the Rathgen research laboratory of the State Museum in Berlin.

From 1981 to 2004 he was honorary professor for archaeometry at the TU Berlin . Since 2004 he has been a volunteer at the Rathgen Research Laboratory in Berlin and the Bavarian National Museum in Munich. Riederer last lived in Oberammergau .

Riederer has published numerous archaeometric and archaeometallurgical works and written various review articles and bibliographies on analytical methods in archaeometry. He has also organized several exhibitions and written a book on art forgery.
