Josef Schlierholz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Josef Schlierholz , later von Schlierholz , (also Joseph ; * 1817 in Biberach an der Riss ; † 1907 ) was an architect and director of the Royal Württemberg State Railways .

Origin and education

The father was a carpenter, architect and building contractor in Biberach, his mother was Josepha, née Bach (* 1787; † January 2, 1859 in Biberach an der Riss). Josef Schlierholz first attended the trade school in Stuttgart and in 1838 switched to the building academy in Munich and the polytechnic there . He completed his training with the "higher building qualification".

Career

He found his first job in the district building authority in Calw . In 1845 he switched to the Royal Württemberg State Railways , where he was initially an inspector, from 1862 a building officer and finally a director.

From 1867 he was in charge of the construction of the Ulm – Sigmaringen railway line . He used concrete on a large scale for building construction . The reason for this was the cost savings and the easy availability of concrete: In Ulm there were the Leube and Schwenk cement factories . As a trial, three concrete railway keeper's houses were built. As this turned out to be successful, further high-rise buildings using this technology followed along the route and also elsewhere in the Württemberg railway network, such as the reception building of the (former) Wolfegg station . Schlierholz attached great importance to functionality and his designs seem rather Swabian and economical .

From 1862 to 1865 he taught building engineering at the University of Tübingen . For his lifetime achievement he was ennobled by the King of Württemberg.

Worth knowing

In addition to his work for the railway, a design for the ballroom, church and kitchen building of the madhouse in Tübingen is known.
