The Schwenk cement KG is a German cement producer . The company's head office is in Ulm . There are further branches in Germany as well as Switzerland , the Netherlands , Hungary , Poland and the Czech Republic as well as with the Ohorongo cement factory in Namibia .

history

The company's origins go back to 1847 when Eduard Schwenk started producing cement in Söflingen . The first production facility was in a former monastery mill, followed ten years later in our own ovens in Allmendingen and Gerhausen . After Eduard Schwenk died in 1869, his widow Marie took over the company and expanded it further. In 1874 her son Carl Schwenk joined the company, who was able to present the first precast concrete products in 1876. On July 16, 1889, a new plant was opened in Allmendingen, followed twelve years later by the plant in Mergelstetten . In 1937 the company acquired the Karlstadt cement plant in northern Bavaria . In 1955, the first Schwenks rotary kiln was put into operation in Allmendingen . In 1985 the company acquired Isotex Baustoffwerke , which strengthened the insulation technology sector. After the reunification in the GDR , the company acquired the cement works in Bernburg (Saale) in 1990 . This was completely rebuilt and when it opened in 1994 it was the most modern cement plant in Europe. In 2003 the Federal Cartel Office imposed a fine of 142 million euros on the company for participating in the cement cartel . Schwenk Zement appealed against the judgment to the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court. The OLG Düsseldorf largely confirmed the allegations of the Federal Cartel Office and concluded the proceedings with reduced fines against Schwenk (to € 70 million) and the other parties involved in the cement cartel.

Since March 2008, Schwenk Limes GmbH & Co. KG (Eduard Schleicher, attributable to Schwenk Zement KG) has held at least 50% of the shares in Paul Hartmann AG .

In January 2014, the company was ranked 233rd in the ranking of the 500 largest family businesses in Germany by the Wirtschaftsblatt magazine .

The Schleicher family is included in the list of the 500 richest Germans compiled by Manager Magazin with a fortune of 2.50 billion euros, which corresponds to 40th place (as of 2013).
