Josef Staudigl ( March 18, 1850 in Vienna - April 21, 1916 in Karlsruhe ) was an Austrian opera singer ( baritone ).

Life

Born as the son of the singer Josef Staudigl , he wanted to devote himself to studying medicine after graduating from high school. His vocal talent alone prompted him to embark on a career as a singer. For this purpose he attended the Vienna Conservatory, first trained with Franz Krenn , later with Kammersänger Hans Rokitansky and then with Anton Bruckner . He dared his first attempt at the stage (1874) as Jakob in Josef and his brothers at the court theater in Karlsruhe. The artist worked there in the first position for ten years. Appointed Badischer Kammersänger for his great merits, he nevertheless left this place in 1885 and signed up for German opera in America, where he worked under Damrosch in 1885 and 1886 for his services as Wotan, Holländer, Wolfram, Don Juan, Escamillo, Telramund, Pizarro etc. met with stormy applause, although it must be mentioned that he was the first to interpret the role of Wotan in America. He gained no less recognition for his German recitals. Returning to Germany in 1887, he settled in Berlin and for ten years toured all the major cities in Germany, Holland and Switzerland, mostly as a concert singer, and was again committed to America in 1898, where he was immediately welcomed as an opera singer.

In 1885 he married the opera singer Gisela Koppmayer .
