Groiss became a qualified geologist in 1960 and received his doctorate in Munich in 1962 (geological and micropalaeontological investigations in the Jura region west of Neuburg an der Donau). He then worked as an assistant at the University of Erlangen, where he became a private lecturer in 1969 and then a professor.

He published a geological guide to the Nördlinger Ries . In addition to the micropaleontology of the Franconian Jura , he also published about large mammal finds from the Quaternary , for example from the Moggaster cave near Ebermannstadt in Upper Franconia.
