Hans Josef Tymister (born February 19, 1937 in Aachen ; † March 29, 2017 in Schliengen ) was a German educator , linguist , depth psychologist and phenomenologist . I.a. He taught at the University of Hamburg (1978–2000) and at the Academy for Consulting and Philosophy in Schliengen (2003–2017), which he co-founded. Standing in the tradition of Alfred Adler , man is essentially characterized by his social relationship. Against this background, he understood the principle of encouragement as the central principle for promoting and healthy human development. As a student of the Aachen and Freiburg philosopher Gustav Siewerth , he was able to build a bridge between philosophy and applied pedagogy with his philosophy, which was shaped by Martin Heidegger . One of his teaching and research focuses were the philosophical- existence-analytical prerequisites and implications of pedagogical work, in particular "pedagogical advice" as well as the phenomenological hermeneutics of facticity and its transfer into pedagogical advisory work.

Life

He was a student of the individual psychologists Oscar Christensen and Rudolf Dreikurs , who with Alfred Adler led individual psychology as social psychology more and more out of medicine and into education. He delimited educational advice, which he understood as helping people to help themselves, from psychotherapy, which, in contrast, focuses on the healing of mental illnesses. Against this background, he was critical of the use of psychotherapy in schools because, in his view, children with school difficulties are not or not necessarily mentally ill. Tymister founded a successful educational program that viewed instructional psychology critically and instead focused on the individual. A basic principle of all upbringing, growth, teaching and learning processes, both in teaching, in individual psychological and existence analytical counseling and fundamentally in social interaction in family, work and community, is encouragement, according to Tymister. He joins the founding fathers among the individual psychologists (A. Adler, R. Dreikurs, D. Dinkelmeyer and many more). Unlike some of his individual psychological colleagues, however, he did not see encouragement as a mechanical strategy or technique for achieving a goal, but rather as a fundamental attitude towards people that is characterized by respect, appreciation, trust and social equality. Tymister's basic principles adopted u. a. also the ecotrophologist and individual psychological and existence analysis consultant Sonja M. Mannhardt, with whom he founded the Academy for Consultation and Philosophy. He also paid special attention to the linguistics training of the teachers, especially the German teachers, in which he sees the most important means of encouragement. From his experience in bringing up children and young people, he has also developed learning models for adults based on the same principles of encouragement. Building on the individual psychological work of Rudolf Dreikurs, the focus of his teaching and research activities was in the area of pedagogical advice, which he saw as an aid in dealing with tasks, problems and conflicts in life with children and young people and in the "open Counseling Center "practiced.

From 1978 to 2000 he was professor for educational sciences with special emphasis on elementary school education at the University of Hamburg. His encouragement model was recommended in several West German federal states in the 1980s, before individual psychological approaches were increasingly pursued again in the post-reunification period. After his retirement he became a teaching advisor and head of the Academy for Consulting and Philosophy in Schliengen.
