Josef Veleba

Josef Veleba (born August 26, 1914 in Gradlitz , Bohemia ; † July 22, 1997 in Gasteil , Lower Austria) was an Austrian horn player .

Life

Josef Veleba was a student of Karl Stiegler and Gottfried von Freiberg , both well-known Viennese horn players and members of the Vienna Philharmonic . From 1934 to 1938 he worked as a musician both in the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra and in the stage orchestra of the Vienna State Opera . In 1939 Veleba switched to the State Opera Orchestra and in 1940 he finally became a member of the Vienna Philharmonic, where he played until his retirement in 1977, for many years also as principal horn player. In addition to his orchestral work, he was a member of the Vienna Octet, with which he recorded numerous recordings.

As a horn teacher, Veleba was a professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna from 1962 to 1974 . In addition, from 1962 to 1984 he directed a horn class at the Vienna Music Academy. His students included u. a. Günter Högner , Roland Horvath , Willibald Janezic, Franz Söllner, Friedrich Pfeiffer and Wolfgang Tomböck jun.
