Josef Walburg (born May 5, 1924 in Langendorf (Gleiwitz district) , Upper Silesia , † July 10, 2006 in Hünfeld ) was a German wood sculptor.

life and work

Josef Walburg comes from Langendorf in Upper Silesia (Gleiwitz district), where his parents ran an estate. There he attended elementary school. Before and during the Second World War he was engaged in the navy and was taken prisoner of war on May 1, 1945. After his release from captivity (in August 1945) he came to Wüstensachsen , where he met his future wife Irmgard Enders. He learned the wood carving trade from his father-in-law. From 1951 he started his own business.

His carvings, which often depict Christian motifs, can be found in Margretenhaun , Niesig or Höhr-Grenzhausen in the Rhineland , among others . He carved stations of the cross for some churches and a crucifixion group for a school in Schönbrunn (Staffelstein). His work for the Catholic parish church in Ehrenberg -Wüstensachsen should also be emphasized.

His main works include figures of saints that can be found all over Germany.

From November 1968 to November 1970 Josef Walburg was honorary mayor of Wüstensachsen. From January 1971 to November 1972 provisional mayor of the newly created municipality of Ehrenberg.

In recognition of his many years of work for the common good, he was awarded the Medal of Merit of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in June 1985 .

Josef Walburg died on July 10, 2006 in Hünfeld and was buried in the cemetery in Ehrenberg-Wüstensachsen.
