former Josefsbad on Josefsplatz in Baden

The Josefsbad at Josefsplatz 2 is a former bathing establishment in the Lower Austrian town of Baden . The building is a listed building and is currently (2020) used as a restaurant.

history

The former bath was once called Rohrbadl am Anger , was owned by the Augustinian monastery and was bought by the city of Baden in 1650. After it was destroyed by the Turks in 1683, it was rebuilt in 1697 as a baroque rectangular building with a former porch and in 1804 it was extended on the east side with a round dome , borrowed from ancient forms .

In 1877, a renovation took place in the course of the urban bath reform (Project World Health Resort Baden ). In 1893, according to a plan drawn up by Eugen Faßbender (1854–1923), the Josefsbad was to be replaced by a new building in the style of a Vienna Ringstrasse palace. After the Second World War, the bathroom was put back into service on August 9, 1948 after a modest repair and from then on it always had problems with the relaxation rooms . In connection with the abandonment of the municipal baths due to the central health resort building, the municipality leased it as a restoration company from the mid-1970s with corresponding renovations; In 1994 it was handed over to a new tenant with a dedication, and in 1995 it was extensively renovated. In 1989, after almost 90 years of operation, the track loop of the Badener Bahn that captured the Josefsbad was abandoned, which made it possible to redesign the traffic areas surrounding the solitary building .

The Josefsbad was used by Constanze Mozart , wife of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , during a spa stay in 1791 .

Since 2011, the Josefsbad has been rented by the municipality of Baden to the Grossauer "el Gaucho" Steakhouse GmbH & Co KG, which in 2019 renovated and refurbished the location.
