Josep Brugada

Josep Brugada (* 1958 in Banyoles ) is a Spanish cardiologist . Together with his brother Pedro Brugada , he is one of the namesake of the Brugada syndrome (also Brugada-Brugada syndrome ), a rare and mostly inherited ion channel disease of the heart that can lead to sudden cardiac death in people with apparently completely healthy hearts, usually in early adulthood.

biography

Josep Brugada was the third of four children of Ramon Brugada (1925–1999) and Pepita Brugada, b. Terradellas, born in Spain. He studied medicine at the University of Barcelona until 1982 , followed by his doctorate in 1987. After a stay at the University of Montpellier , he was a professor at the Department of Physiology at the University of Limburg (Maastricht) from 1988 to 1991 . In 1997 Brugada became an associate professor at the University of Barcelona and has been a professor since 2009. From 2007 to 2009 he was President of the European Heart Rhythm Association of the European Society of Cardiology .

Brugada syndrome

In 1992 the brothers Pedro and Josep Brugada, who were working in Belgium at the time, described eight patients who had been successfully resuscitated after cardiac arrest and who all showed a special form of right bundle branch block in the EKG , but otherwise no signs of an organic heart disease.
