Josep Masriera
Josep Masriera i Manovens (born January 22, 1841 in Barcelona , † January 31, 1912 there ) was a Catalan landscape painter, goldsmith and art writer. He is the brother of the painter and goldsmith Francesc Masriera .
life and work
As a goldsmith Masriera received his training in the workshop of his father Josep Masriera i Vidal and in Paris, where he learned to engrave on fine stones. He was trained as a painter at the Llotja in Barcelona . As a landscape painter, he was influenced by Joaquim Vayreda and the landscape painting school of Olot . He worked out details in particular in his landscape works. He often addressed the landscape around Llavaneres . He took part in exhibitions in Barcelona, Madrid, Saragossa, Munich, Berlin and Paris, among others. He became a member of the Acadèmia de Ciències i Arts of Barcelona and the Acadèmia de Belles Art de Sant Jordi . He was president of the Cercle Artístic , the artists' association of Barcelona since 1889.
As an art writer, he published the biographies of artists of his previous generation such as those of Lluís Rigalt i Farriols (1894, his teacher at the Llotja in Barcelona), Claudio Lorenzale (1895), Francisco Miquel y Badia (1900), as well as writings on aesthetics such as Influencia del estilo japonés en las artes europeas (1885, The Influence of the Japanese Style on European Arts).
Rating
Josep Masriera's career and importance as an artist was closely linked to that of his brother Francesc. Josep Masriera and his brother Francesc were “ caciques ”, a kind of leader of the initiates of the Catalan painting of the time.
