Against the background of the beginning republicanism, he initially represented an anti-academic naturalism as a painter. However, he soon turned to a detailed realism stylistically. Many of his works contain allegories and anecdotes. Particularly noteworthy is the portrait L'esclav (The Slave Girl). He had created this for the National Exhibition in Madrid in 1876. The Spanish King Alfonso XII. later bought this work. Masriera was the preferred portrait painter of the women of the upper Catalan bourgeoisie. Characteristic of his work is the “precision”, in a sense the painting of pieces of jewelry. He reproduced fabrics and objects such as silk, velor, feathers or jewelry accessories in his pictures with great precision and great beauty.

Masriera was a great admirer of the two painters Marià Fortuny and Eduardo Rosales . Together with his brother Josep, he had a neoclassical studio or a neoclassical exhibition hall for painters and artists in the form of a Corinthian temple, the so-called Taller Masriera , also known as the Temple of Art , built at Carrer de Bailèn number 70-72 in Barcelona . The two statues at the entrance to this studio were dedicated to Marà Fortuny and Eduardo Rosales. The sculptures by Marià Fortuny and Eduardo Rosales, which were later supplemented by two more sculptures, are now considered lost or cannot be found.

Francesc Masriera often exhibited in the salons of Madrid and Paris. He was artistically present in the Sala Parès, the leading art gallery in Barcelona. Many of his works hang in the Museum of Modern Art and the National Museum of Catalonia in Barcelona. Francesc Masriera and his brother Josep were “ caciques ”, that is, leaders of the initiates of the Catalan painting of the time.
