After attending Ignaz Schraudolph's drawing school , Fischer came to Joseph Schlotthauer (history painting) at the Munich Art Academy in 1831 . At the age of 18, Fischer went to central Italy on behalf of Crown Prince Maximilian to copy important works of art by Raffael . Back in Germany, Fischer painted cardboard boxes for Prof. Heinrich von Hess for the windows of the Mariahilfkirche in Munich's Au district in 1835 . The cardboard boxes , like the stained glass windows themselves (except for The Adoration of the Magi ), fell victim to the Second World War .

Further trips to Italy followed in the 1840s. Fischer also stayed more often in his birthplace Oberstdorf and in the sulfur baths in Tiefenbach . He suffered from stomach bleeding and was at the end of his strength. Fischer died in 1859. Most of his estate, intended for a fisherman's museum in Oberstdorf, was burned (1865, during the so-called Great Fire ).
