Joseph Anton Morath

Joseph Anton Morath (born January 13, 1761 in Stühlingen ; † December 21, 1831 there ) was an art and barrel painter . He is confused with Johann Anton Morath on various occasions .

Life

His father was the painter Johann Baptist Morath , born on October 7th, 1732 in Bonndorf in the Black Forest , he is named as a renovator and painter on September 23rd, 1766, he died at the age of 47. His son established himself as a decorative painter and before 1794 was commissioned to set two side altars in the church in Mühlenbach . In 1806 he created the right side altar sheet in the church in Jestetten , which depicts St. Nepomuk. In 1816 he was supposed to be appointed master drawing of the applied drawing school by the city of Stühlingen, but the school was never realized. In 1827 he made a flag leaf in oil for the parish of Waldkirchnear Waldshut, which shows the Assumption of Mary, the twelve apostles and St. Joseph with the baby Jesus. In 1834 he renewed the two side altars of the Jestetter church. He made some oil portraits of local people. He was a member of the city council and treasurer. He was married to Margarete Trettner from Gottmadingen and they had six children, including his successor as a painter and lithographer Johann Martin Morat .
