Joseph Blake Tyson (born August 30, 1928 in Charlotte , North Carolina ) is an American Methodist theologian and university professor. Tyson taught at Southern Methodist University until his retirement . His specialty is New Testament research . Tyson also served in the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church as a minister for the Catawba Valley District in Catawba County .

Life

Tyson earned his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Divinity degrees from Duke University in Durham , North Carolina, and his Ph.D. at Union Theological Seminary in New York . He was a total of 1958 to 1998 at Southern Methodist University, from 1958 to 1960 as an assistant professor, from 1960 to 1965 as an associate professor and from 1965 as a full professor. In 1965–1975 and 1986–1993 he was also chairman of the department. His main research interests were New Testament studies, the history of early Christianity and Judeo-Christian relations.

Many of his publications refer to the texts of the author of the Gospel according to Luke and the Acts of the Apostles . One of his studies was on Marcion and the author of the Lukan scripts. Here he takes the view that the 'Marcionite Gospel' with an original version of the Gospel of Luke was one of the first Gospels ever and that the later Gospel according to Luke and the Acts of the Apostles ascribed to the author were only written as a response to the 'Marcionite Gospel' . Other earlier works include Luke and Judaism .
