Joseph Eugene Gillet

Joseph Eugene Gillet (* 1888 in Hasselt (Belgium) ; † 1958 in Philadelphia ) was an American Romance philologist and Hispanist of Belgian origin.

life and work

Gillet received his doctorate in 1910 at the University of Liège with the thesis Molière en Angleterre 1660-1670 (Brussels 1913), studied in Munich and Berlin and taught at the University of Edinburgh . In 1913 he emigrated to the United States, was an infantryman in World War I, then worked in the foreign department of the National City Bank in New York, and finally a lecturer.

Gillet first taught German at the University of Wisconsin , then Romance languages ​​at the University of Illinois . From 1921 to 1924 he was Assistant Professor of Romance Languages ​​at the University of Minnesota , then Associate Professor and Head of the Spanish Department at Bryn Mawr College , and from 1948 to 1958 Professor of Romance Studies at the University of Pennsylvania , and visiting professor at the University of Chicago , Princeton University, and the University of California at Berkeley .

Gillet was the editor of Hispanic Review magazine .
