Joseph "Jo" Gonzales (born August 6, 1941 in Narbonne ) is a former French light middleweight boxer and silver medalist at the 1964 Summer Olympics.

Amateur career

The approximately 1.73 m tall right-wing middleweight (up to 71 kg) was French champion from 1962 to 1964 and took part in the 15th European Championships in Moscow in 1963 , where he was only eliminated from the GDR in the quarter-finals against Siegfried Olesch .

In 1964 he started at the 18th Summer Olympics in Tokyo , defeating Koji Masuda, Japan , Anthony Barber, Australia and Nojim Maiyegun , Nigeria . In the final fight he finally had to admit defeat to Boris Lagutin , Soviet Union , and thus reached 2nd place.

Professional career

In 1964 he turned pro and won his first 14 fights in a row by knockout. He suffered his first defeat in November 1965 on points against the American Ferd Hernandez. By the end of 1967 he had a record of 32 wins, 2 losses and 2 draws, defeating several national champions, as well as the former European champion Yoland Levèque and the later European champion José Hernández .

On December 1, 1967, he boxed in Rome for the European Championship ( EBU ) in the light middleweight division against Sandro Mazzinghi , but was defeated by the Italian by knockout in the fourth round. After three more fights he boxed again on November 29, 1968 in Rome for the EBU title against Remo Golfarini , but had to admit defeat to this on points. On March 13, 1970 he won the French championship against Jean-Baptiste Rolland. After two knockout losses against Jean-Claude Bouttier and Jacques Kechichian , he ended his boxer career in June 1974.

After his active career, he became the owner of a grill restaurant in Narbonne.
