Joseph Héliodore Sagesse Vertu Garcin de Tassy (born January 25, 1794 in Marseille , † September 2, 1878 ibid) was a French orientalist .

Life

At the Collège de France in Paris Garcin de Tassy learned oriental languages ​​and became a student of the philologist Silvestre de Sacy . Later, at his suggestion (and Garcin de Tassy's wishes), the École spéciale des langues orientales was founded in Paris and Gracin de Tassy was given a chair for Indian language there.

When Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord died in 1838, the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres chose Garcin de Tassy as its successor to its member. As such, he was instrumental in founding the Société asiatique and later also one of its directors. Since 1858 he was a foreign member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . In 1876 he was accepted as a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences . He was a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg since 1856.

In addition to his own scientific work, Garcin de Tassy also made a name for himself as a translator from Arabic . Later, research into the Hindustan language became a major focus and was soon regarded as a luminary .

At the age of 84, Garcin de Tassy starred in his native city on September 2, 1878, and found his final resting place there.
