Joseph Hermann Waser (born June 10, 1901 in Lucerne ; † October 16, 1994 in Bern ) was a Swiss painter .

Life

Joseph Hermann Waser was born on June 10, 1901 in Lucerne as an Engelberger who is entitled to reside . In 1914 he moved to Bern with his parents Robert and Karolina Waser-Felder and their five siblings.

After an apprenticeship as a typeface painter, he and his brother Robert opened a typeface, graphic and interior design business in 1921. In addition to his job as an advertising specialist and interior designer, he attended several advanced training courses and learned how to carve and sculpt.

Waser has been drawing and painting since the 1930s. He attended drawing courses (life drawing) at the Bern School of Applied Arts with Ernst Linck and took private painting lessons from him and Walter Clénin (1897–1988). After the lettering business was dissolved in 1948, JH Waser became a freelance painter in Bern.

Artistic work

Waser occupied himself with glass painting , with wall paintings and the painting of landscapes, still lifes and portraits (among others by Stephan Jaeggi , brass music composer). He made a name for himself primarily as a portraitist. His various kinds of flower still lifes became popular, with their bright colors often reminiscent of late Fauvist pictures.

Various long study trips took him to Holland, England, Italy and several times to France, especially to Provence and the Côte d'Azur, in the 1950s and 1960s.

But Swiss landscapes, especially in and around Bern (especially the Emmental ), inspired him to create many, sometimes colorful, expressive paintings, which were highlighted in press reports on exhibitions. He also created drawings of landscapes and people in and around the city of Bern. They are executed in black litho chalk.

Waser was concerned in his art work with “the incessant research into the real content of things. Painting is design and constant redesign, ie abstraction, leaving out details, creating a whole out of the many ».

JH Waser was a figurative artist of the 20th century who - similar to his contemporary Cuno Amiet , whose mother also came from Engelberg - processed various stylistic influences.
