Joseph J. Ellis (born July 18, 1943 ) is an American historian who mainly published on the founding fathers of the United States .

Ellis received his PhD from Yale University in 1969 and has been a full professor at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts since 1979 . His book Founding Brothers won the Pulitzer Prize . He lives in Amherst , Massachusetts with his wife and has three sons. His books Founding Brothers and His Excellency George Washington have also been translated into German .
