Joseph Jack Kirkland

Joseph Jack Kirkland , called Jack Kirkland, (born May 24, 1925 in Winter Garden , Florida , † October 30, 2016 ) was an American chemist . He is one of the developers of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) in the mid-1960s.

Kirkland graduated from Emory University with undergraduate and graduate degrees in chemistry and received a PhD in analytical chemistry from the University of Virginia in 1953 . From 1953 to 1992 he worked at DuPont .

In 1989 he co-founded Rockland Technologies, which was taken over by Hewlett-Packard (HP) in 1997 . Kirkland stayed with HP after the acquisition and retired in 2001. From 2005 until his death he was with Advanced Materials Technology, most recently as Vice President for Research.

He is known for various technical improvements to HPLC columns:

  • 1969 superficially porous particles (Zipax)
  • 1972 Permaphase
  • 1972 Zorbax (direct synthesis of 5-micron particles with a narrow range of diameters)
  • Zorbax-Rx 1988, with pure silica particles
  • StableBond 1989, low pH packages that were stable at high temperatures
  • 2006 Halo, with so-called shell particles (shell particles) with a significant increase in the efficiency of the column and as an alternative to the use of particles having diameters smaller than 2 micrometers at high pressures.

His work with Joe Glajch and others on HPLC optimization with four solvents (using both normal and reverse phase HPLC) was a forerunner of the later computational design. He was one of the developers of the hydrophobic subtraction model for reversed-phase liquid chromatography.

Before working with liquid chromatography, he also made important contributions to gas chromatography. For a few years he also dealt with field-river fractionation . He wrote eight books on HPLC and gave regular courses on them, organized by the American Chemical Society . In 1982 he received the Torbern Bergman Medal from the Swedish Chemical Society .
