Joseph Merhi (Bishop)

Joseph Merhi CML (born January 18, 1912 in Mreijat , Lebanon , † March 30, 2006 ) was a Lebanese clergyman and Maronite bishop of Cairo .

Life

Joseph Merhi joined the Maronite religious order of the Congregation of the Lebanese-Maronite Missionaries and was ordained a priest of the Maronite Church, united with the Roman Catholic Church, on July 13, 1936.

In 1972 he was appointed by Pope Paul VI. appointed Bishop of the Cairo eparchy of the Maronites. He was ordained bishop on August 26, 1972 by Pierre-Paul Cardinal Méouchi ; Co- consecrators were Nasrallah Boutros Sfeir and Archbishop Ignace Abdo Khalifé .

As is customary in his church, he sought a retirement at the age of 75. The request was granted in 1989.
