Joseph O'Hare

Joseph Aloysius O'Hare SJ (born February 12, 1931 in West Bronx , New York City , † March 29, 2020 in Bronx , New York City) was an American religious . He was President of Fordham University from 1984 to 2003 and Chairman of the New York City Campaign Finance Board for the first fifteen years from 1988 to 2003 .

Life

O'Hare entered the Jesuit Order in 1948. He served in pastoral care in the Philippines and studied at Berchmans College in Cebu City . He taught at Ateneo de Manila University from 1955 to 1958 and from 1967 to 1972 . At Woodstock College in Baltimore , he completed further philosophical and theological studies; at Fordham University in New York, he completed his PhD in 1968 . On June 17, 1961, he was ordained a priest. He was deputy editor-in-chief from 1972 to 1975 and editor-in-chief of Jesuit magazine America from 1975 to 1984 . As a columnist, he has won several awards from the Catholic Press Association. He was also superior in the Jesuit mother house in the USA in New York.

From 1984 to 2003 he was President of Fordham University in New York. Among other things, he was President of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities and the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities . O'Hare received 11 honorary degrees, including one from Fordham. In 1988, Mayor Edward Koch named the Jesuit O'Hare founding chairman of the New York Campaign Finance Board.
