Joseph Powell (born June 23, 1828 in Towanda , Bradford County , Pennsylvania , †  April 24, 1904 there ) was an American politician . Between 1875 and 1877 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Joseph Powell attended preparatory schools and then worked in commerce and banking. Between 1870 and 1889 he was President of the First National Bank of Towanda . Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . In the congressional elections of 1874 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 15th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded John Alexander Magee on March 4, 1875 . Since he was not confirmed in 1876, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1877 .

Between 1885 and 1889 Joseph Powell worked for the Tax Department in the Port of Philadelphia ; from 1889 to 1893 he was sheriff in Bradford County. He died on April 24, 1904 in his hometown Towanda, where he was buried.
