Joseph Pritz (born March 12, 1913 in Emmersdorf an der Donau , † December 17, 1977 ) was a Catholic fundamental theologian.

Career

Pritz worked in the diocese of St. Pölten from 1936 as a chaplain in various parishes, as cathedral curate in St. Pölten and as rector in the Episcopal Seminary in Melk. From 1949 to 1962 he was professor of dogmatics at the Philosophical-Theological Institute (now: Hochschule) St. Pölten and from 1964 to 1974 he was full professor of fundamental theology at the University of Vienna .

Theological focus

Pritz took part in the "anthropological turn" in theology: one can only meaningfully speak of God when one speaks of man at the same time. His goal was a "cosmopolitan theology from the center of faith". It was about bringing together and looking at the world of faith and the world of life. Pritz campaigned for a new edition and re-evaluation of Anton Günther's literature .
