Joseph Séguy
Joseph Séguy (* 1689 in Rodez , † March 25, 1761 in Meaux ) was a French Roman Catholic clergyman, Commendatarabbot , poet and member of the Académie française .
life and work
Abbé Joseph Séguy was court preacher. In 1729 he held the traditional eulogy for Louis the Saint before the Académie française and, since he was not well off, was rewarded with the charge of Commendatabts of the Premonstratensian Abbey of Genlis in Villequier-Aumont . In 1732 he received the Academy’s Poetry Prize. In 1735 he gave the funeral speech for Marshal Claude-Louis-Hector de Villars . Thereupon his widow Jeanne-Angélique Roque de Varengeville pushed for his admission to the academy so vigorously that more qualified candidates like Jean-François Boyer or Pierre-Claude Nivelle de La Chaussée withdrew their candidacy (Boyer) or were defeated in the vote (La Chaussée). He was admitted in 1736 and occupied seat No. 36. Criticism of the proceedings by Pierre François Guyot Desfontaines could be absorbed. Séguy himself was embarrassed by the process. He later longed to be forgotten and withdrew to his canonical in Meaux. There he died in 1761 at the age of 71 and was buried in the cathedral of Meaux .
Séguy had a brother with an unknown first name, who was a friend of Jean-Baptiste Rousseau and who oversaw his posthumous work from 1743.
