Joseph Sadler

Joseph Sadler (born May 6, 1791 in Bratislava , † March 12, 1849 in Pest ) was a Habsburg , Slovak-Hungarian botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Sadler ".

Live and act

Sadler studied pharmacy in Pest with a master's degree in 1810 and medicine from 1815 with a doctorate in 1820 (Descriptionem Plantarum Epiphyllospermarum Hungariae). As a student he was an assistant in chemistry and botany and from 1821 was curator in the natural history cabinet of the Hungarian National Museum . From 1826 to 1830 he was dean of the medical faculty in Pest and from 1834 professor of botany and director of the botanical garden. He also taught chemistry.

He dealt with the recent and fossil flora of Hungary and published the first collections of dried Hungarian plants in 1823 (Exsiccate). The genus of the Farne Sadleria from Hawaii was named after him by Georg Friedrich Kaulfuss .

In 1831 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . He was a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences .

Honors

After him is the fern genus Sadleria Kaulf. named from the Blechnaceae family.
