Franz Joseph Uhrig (born July 2, 1808 in Laudenbach (Lower Franconia) , † July 2, 1874 ) was a German entrepreneur , brewer and restaurateur .

Life

Joseph Uhrig's parents were Ignatz Joseph Uhrig († 1844) and Anna Maria Uhrig (née Sittinger; † 1830). His family worked in shipping on the Main .

His older brother, Johann Andreas, had emigrated to the USA earlier and ran a small transport company there in Calhoun County with its own steamboat. Joseph followed him and took over the business. Johann Andreas started to work as a trader.

Joseph Uhrig later worked as a ferryman on the Susquehanna River . In 1838 he moved to St. Louis , where he first ran a timber trade and later worked in shipping on the Illinois River . The name of his transport ship was "Pearl".

When his brother Ignatz also emigrated in 1836, they decided to get into the brewery business. Together with Anton Kraut, they opened Camp Spring Brewery on Market Street in St. Louis in 1839 . Two years later, Kraut died of cholera and the brewery operated under the name Joseph Uhrig Brewing Company .

Not far from the brewery was a large piece of land on the corner of Locust Street and Washington Avenue that belonged to the famous doctor William Beaumont . Since there was a spacious cave under this property, they decided in 1852 to buy it and convert the cave into a storage room.

It was in this cave that the brothers finally opened the Uhrig's Cave . In order to transport the beer from the brewery to the restaurant faster, they had a connecting tunnel dug between the cellars and a rail connection installed. Uhrig's Cave was a popular meeting place in St. Louis in the following decades , where plays were also performed. In the 1860s, the Uhrigs sold the business to Chris Nunce.

Uhrig was a founder and vice president of the Brewer's Fire Insurance Company of Milwaukee. In addition, he was a member of the pioneer association.

Uhrig died in 1874. He is buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis .
