Franz Ignatz Uhrig (born March 1, 1820 in Laudenbach ; † February 9, 1861 in St. Louis ) was a German entrepreneur , brewer and restaurateur .

biography

His parents were Ignatz Joseph Uhrig († 1844) and Anna Maria Uhrig (née Sittinger; † 1830). His family worked in shipping on the Main .

His brothers Johann and Joseph had emigrated to the USA . Ignatz followed them in 1836 and joined Joseph's transport company.

Together, Joseph and Ignatz decided to get into the brewery business. In 1839 you and Anton Kraut opened the Camp Spring Brewery on Market Street. Two years later, Kraut died of cholera and the brewery operated under the name Joseph Uhrig Brewing Company .

Not far from the brewery was a large piece of land on the corner of Locust Street and Washington Avenue that belonged to the famous doctor William Beaumont . Since there was a large cave under this property, they decided in 1852 to buy it and convert the cave into a storage room.

The brothers opened the Uhrig's Cave in this cave . In order to transport the beer from the brewery to the restaurant faster, they had a connecting tunnel dug between the cellars and a rail connection installed. Uhrig's Cave was a popular meeting place in St. Louis in the following decades , where plays were also performed.

Uhrig built a series of stone houses ( Stein's Town ) in 1851 , which were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

Uhrig died on February 9, 1861. He was buried two days later in Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis .
