Joseph Xu Zhixuan

Joseph Xu Zhixuan (born 1916 in Sichuan Province , China ; † December 8, 2008 in Wanzhou , China) was the Catholic Bishop of Wanzhou. He was assigned to the underground church loyal to Rome .

Life

Joseph Xu Zhixuan was ordained a priest in 1949 . In 1989 he was appointed coadjutor - bishop in the diocese of Wanxian , later diocese Wanzhou in the district of the city-administered Chongqing , ordered. He was director of the Sichuan seminary, where he also taught. He was involved in pastoral work. After the death of the Bishop of Wanzhou Matthias Duan Yinming in 2001, he succeeded him.

Pope John Paul II invited Bishop Duan, together with his coadjutor Joseph Xu Zhixuan, to the Asia Synod in Rome in 1998. However, the Chinese government has forbidden them to leave the country. The Holy See reserved two places for Chinese Bishops Xu and Duan. A fax from Bishop Xu was read out by Synod Secretary General Jan Schotte at the World Bishops Synod , which met in the Vatican in 2001 , to the applause of almost 300 synods .

Bishop Xu died of multiple organ failure after health problems.
