life and career

Originally from Nova Scotia, Josephine Crowell was on stage by 1879 at the latest. Little is known today about her early acting career at traveling theaters or in vaudeville shows. In September 1902, she starred in the Broadway comedy Captain Molly . In 1911, Crowell first appeared in front of the camera in the short film Her Mother's Sins - in the role of mother, a type of role she would play in numerous US silent films of the 1910s and 1920s. She played a larger role as Mrs. Cameron in David Wark Griffith's controversial film classic The Birth of a Nation (1915), and the following year she used Griffith again as Caterina de Medici in his seminal epic film Intolerance . In addition to Caterina de Medici, she also played several aristocratic women or queens, for example alongside Conrad Veidt in The Man Who Laughs , directed by Paul Leni .

Later in her career, Crowell also played her matronly characters alongside comedians like Harold Lloyd and Charley Chase . When she started talking about film, she withdrew from the film business; she had her last role in the Laurel and Hardy film Blinde Wut in 1929 .

She was believed to be married to the French-American actor Emile La Croix (1857-after 1923). In 1932 Josephine Crowell died in Amityville near New York at the age of 73.
