The Jostabeere or Josta ( Ribes × nidigrolaria ), in southern Germany often Jochelbeere in Austria also Rigatze or Joglbeere , is a soft fruit ; As an addition bastard, it mainly originated from the two species black currant ( Ribes nigrum ) and gooseberry ( Ribes uva-crispa ), and the North American species Ribes divaricatum was also crossed. The art name "Josta" was a portmanteau of the names of the two original plants Jo hanni berry and Sta chelbeere formed.

features

The Josta is botanically assigned to the gooseberry family (Grossulariaceae). They are shrubs with broad, upright to overhanging growth and unreinforced shoots. The fruits grow in clusters of three to five and resemble a large blackcurrant in shape and color, but do not grow as large as gooseberries. They are jet black, with a sweet aroma and high vitamin C content. The ripening time is mid-June to July, the fruits do not all ripen at the same time. The yield is regular and higher than that of the parent species, the pickability is usually reduced because the berries are quite firmly attached to the bush.

use

The fruit is suitable for the production of aromatic jams , jellies and juices , for the production of liqueurs , but also for raw consumption. Long-term freezing is possible without any loss of quality.

Systematics

Erwin Baur carried out the first crosses between the currant Ribes × succirubrum and several gooseberry varieties as early as 1922; he called the result then yoke berry . The aim at that time was to develop powdery mildew- resistant berry fruit varieties . As a result, some varieties were selected and offered in West Germany since the late 1970s. At about the same time were in the GDR also hybrids bred from black currants and gooseberries and disseminated under the variety name 'Jocheline'.

Newer varieties:

  • 'Josta' - bred by R. Bauer in Breitbrunn and on the market from 1977. Parent varieties ('Silvergieters Schwarze' × 'Grüne Hansa') × ('Langtraubige Schwarze' × Ribes divaricatum ) × freely bloomed
  • 'Jocheline' - bred by H. Murawski in Müncheberg and distributed from 1983. Parent varieties ' Silvergieters Black ' × 'Green Giant Berry '. The variety 'Jochina' is very similar.
  • 'Jogranda' - bred by R. Bauer in Breitbrunn and available from 1985. An F 3 hybrid from the parent varieties ' Langtraubige Schwarze ' × Ribes divaricatum , subsequently bloomed freely
  • 'Jostine' - bred by R. Bauer in Breitbrunn, plant variety protection since 1989. Cross of ('Langtraubige Schwarze' x Ribes divaricatum ) x ('Silvergieters Schwarze' x 'Grüne Hansa')
  • 'Rikö' - Hungarian variety, plant variety protection since 2001. Parents are 'Silvergieter's Black F59' × 'Lady Delamere'
