Jouko N. Martikainen

Jouko N. Martikainen (* 1936 in Valtimo ) is a Finnish Protestant church historian . He was a professor of church history at the Georg-August University in Göttingen .

Life

He completed his theology studies (1958–1963) at the Åbo Akademi in 1972 with a licentiate in theology. In 1970/1971 he stayed in Cambridge to study with Sebastian Paul Brock . He then worked from 1973 to 1978 in the church service as secretary to the Archbishop of Turku. With the work Evil and the Devil in the Theology of Ephraem the Syrian. A systematic-theological investigation , he received his doctorate in 1978 at the Åbo Akademi . From 1978 to 1981 he conducted research at the Collaborative Research Center 13 at the University of Göttingen. In 1980 he founded the German-Finnish working group for Makarios research and the Makarios Symposium. In 1981/1982 he was general secretary of the ecclesiastical external office of the Lutheran Church of Finland . Since 1982 he has been a lecturer in patristics at the University of Helsinki and since 1984 professor for oriental, especially Syrian, church history at the Georg-August University in Göttingen. He conducts Syrian studies, Christian-Arabic studies and researched the dialogue between Christianity and Islam. He is head of the project Concordance on the Syrian Bible .
