Jovan Đorđević

Jovan Đorđević (* 13 November July / 25 November  1826 greg. In Senta ; † 9 April July / 22 April  1900 greg. In Belgrade ) was a Serbian writer , co-founder of the Serbian National Theater in Novi Sad and author of the National anthem of Serbia Bože Pravde (“God of Justice”).

Life

Đorđević attended schools in Senta, Novi Sad, Szeged and Timisoara . In 1845 he enrolled at Pest Medical School . Due to the revolution of 1848 he had to interrupt his studies and moved to Sombor to live with Isidor Nikolié-Dzaver.

In 1852 he was appointed professor of a grammar school in Novi Sad. There he came into conflict with some members of the patronage church due to the ideas of Vuk Stefanović Karadžić and whereupon he began to work for the cultural association Matica srpska and in the editorial team of the magazine Letopis Matica Srpsk , of which he was editor from 1857 to 1859.

In 1861 he founded the Serbian National Theater in Novi Sad together with Jovan Andrejević Joles . In 1868 he founded the National Theater Belgrade , of which he was general director until 1871.

In 1872 he wrote the text of the Serbian national anthem Bože Pravde.

In 1888 he became professor of general history at the Belgrade High School . In 1893 he became Minister of Education for a short time in the cabinet of the Serbian Prime Minister Jovan Avakumović and in 1887 became a teacher of the Serbian King Aleksandar Obrenović .

Đorđević published many poems and translated many plays into Serbian. He died in Belgrade on April 9, 1900.
