Joy Smithers (born July 15, 1963 in Sydney , New South Wales ) is an Australian actress .

life and career

Joy Smithers was born in Sydney in 1963. She started working as a model for Vogue magazine at the age of 12 . When she was 15, she and her sister Susan were offered a five-year contract by an American music producer. One of her songs received an ARIA Award. Her greatest success, according to Smithers' statement, was an appearance with the Perther Band Eurogliders in front of Prince Charles and Princess Diana .

Smithers is known in Australia from the television series The Flying Doctors , Home and Away and All Saints . She gained international fame in 1989 alongside Nicole Kidman and Denholm Elliott through her role as Mandy Engels in the Australian miniseries Bangkok Hilton . Smithers starred in the action film Mad Max: Fury Road , a sequel to the Mad Max franchise from the 1980s that hit theaters in 2015. Curiously, in 1979 the then 15-year-old Smithers was offered the role of Mad Max's wife, played by Mel Gibson . However, her parents did not allow her.

Joy Smithers has been married to Tony Haines for the second time since 2000. This connection resulted in a son and a daughter. Another daughter comes from a previous relationship.
