Joyce C. Hall

Joyce Clyde Hall (born August 29, 1891 in David City , Nebraska , † October 29, 1982 in Kansas City , Missouri ) was an American entrepreneur and founder of Hallmark Cards .

Life

Hall was born in David City, Nebraska, United States in 1891. His parents were Nancy Dudley Houston and George Nelson Hall, who left the family when Joyce was seven years old. At the age of eight, he began taking odd jobs to help support his family financially.

In 1902 the family moved to Norfolk . Hall's older brothers bought a bookstore with another business partner, in which he worked as a salesman. In 1905, Hall began selling postcards in the area with his brothers. During this time they were able to convince several representatives to include their postcards in their offer. In 1908 they started selling their cards under the name Norfolk Post Card Company .

To expand their business, the Hall brothers moved to Kansas City in 1910. 18-year-old Hall did not finish high school . As early as 1913, the brothers ran their own shop selling postcards and greeting cards. This shop later became the first Hall department store. Although their shop burned down in 1915, the brothers managed to raise enough funds to purchase a printer in 1916. Since then they have been making their own cards. The demand for postcards grew rapidly during World War I , as no European postcards were imported into the USA during this time.

In the 1920s, the company expanded across the country. In 1923 they founded Hall Brothers , Hallmark's predecessor. Since 1928 the cards were sold under the Hallmark Cards brand. In 1944 Joyce C. Hall set the company slogan “When You Care Enough to Send the Very Best”.

In 1954 the company name was changed from Hall Brothers to Hallmark . Hallmark currently operates around 39,000 stores in over 100 countries worldwide.

Hall retired in 1966 at the age of 75 and looked after the revitalization of downtown Kansas City. The Crown Center was born from these efforts . Hall died in Kansas City in 1982. He is buried in Forest Hill Cemetery , Kansas City.

Hall married Elizabeth Ann Dilday in 1921 and had three children, Donald J. Hall, Elizabeth Ann Hall Reid, and Barbara Louise Hall Marshall.
