Joyce Cavalcante

Joyce Cavalcante (born March 12, 1949 in Fortaleza ) is a Brazilian writer . She grew up in Sobral in the state of Ceará .

Life

Joyce Cavalccante was born on March 12, 1949 in Fortaleza in the state of Ceará in Brazil . She spent her childhood in the small town of Sobral on the Fazenda Jatobá, which belonged to her father. During school she moved to Fortaleza.

After graduating, she chose São Paulo as her adopted home in order to develop her career as a writer here. She works as a novelist, narrator, lecturer and chronicler and has published eight books of fictional prose to date. She also participated in several anthologies of short stories with other authors. She lectures on literature at Brazilian and foreign universities and is President of REBRA (Rede de Escritoras Brasileiras), a non-profit organization that aims to improve the professional opportunities of women in Brazil. In 1999 she founded the REBRA-Rede de Escritoras Brasileiras- Her aim is to strengthen the position of women and especially women writers in Brazil through her works, publications and lectures. Since 1983 (meeting of Brazilian writers in New York at the Center for Interamerican Relations, a round table with Lygia Fagundes Telles , Ignácio de Loyola Brandão and Ivan Ângelo ) , she has undertaken numerous lecture tours in Latin America, the USA and Europe.

Awards

In 1979 and 1980 she was awarded a prize for her stories História de um Corpo de Menina and Luta Livre in a writing competition organized by the newspaper Status .
