Joyce Heron

Joyce Heron (born October 28, 1964 in Paisley ) is a former British judoka who was third in the 1993 World Championship.

Athletic career

The 1.47 m tall Joyce Heron fought in the super lightweight, the weight class up to 48 kilograms. Her international career only began in 1992 after Karen Briggs resigned . At the 1993 World Championships in Hamilton, she defeated the Hungarian Klára Vészi in the quarterfinals , and in the semifinals she was defeated by the Chinese Li Aiyue . With a victory over María Elena Villapol from Venezuela, Heron secured a bronze medal. A year and a half later she was defeated by Ukrainian Halina Tomyak in the quarter-finals of the 1995 European Championships in Birmingham . Heron won bronze with victories over the Polish Małgorzata Roszkowska , the German Jana Perlberg and the Italian Giovanna Tortora .

In 1996 Joyce Heron started at the Atlanta Olympics . After a defeat by the Spaniard Yolanda Soler in the round of 16, she defeated the Canadian Carolyne Lepage in the consolation round and then eliminated against Małgorzata Roszkowska. In 1997 Heron finished fifth again at the European Championships and seventh place at the World Championships .
