Joyce Poon (* around 1980 in Hong Kong ) is a Chinese-Canadian physicist and engineer . Since 2019 she has been director at the Max Planck Institute for Microstructure Physics in Halle an der Saale .

Live and act

Poon was born in Hong Kong and grew up in Toronto . She studied engineering at the University of Toronto with a major in physics , where she graduated with a bachelor's degree. In 2003 she completed her master's degree at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), where she also received her Ph.D. acquired. She returned to the University of Toronto as Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering , where she held the Canada Research Chair in Integrated Photonic Devices from 2012 to 2018 . After stays at the Krembil Research Institute , Caltech and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology , she has been an honorary professor at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Technical University of Berlin since 2018 . She and her team specialize in integrated photonic components and circuits based on silicon for communication and neurotechnology. Since 2019 she has been director of the research department Nanophotonics, Integration and Neural Technology (NINT) at the Max Planck Institute for Microstructure Physics. Her main interest is the multi-level and multi-material integrated photonics based on silicon and the integrated microsystems.

She is currently working as an Associate Editor for Optics Express . Poon is a Fellow of the Optical Society (OSA) and has been a member of various OSA program committees since 2009. She is also a researcher at the Neurotech Alliance, which has set itself the goal of further developing and using nanotechnology-based neurotech systems.
