Juan Bautista Spotorno
Juan Bautista Spotorno Georovich (born September 13, 1832 in Trinidad , Cuba ; † October 29, 1917 ibid) was a Cuban colonel in the Ten Years' War and President of the Republic in Arms between June 1875 and March 1876.
Life
Juan Bautista Spotorno grew up in a family of Italian descent in Trinidad, whose name goes back to the Ligurian coastal town of Spotorno . As a child, he was sent to Italy and later to the United States for educational purposes. In the USA he began to study medicine, which he did not complete, but instead devoted himself to trade and returned to his homeland.
From 1863 he was city councilor of Trinidad and head of the first cavalry of the Spanish militia. On February 24, 1870 he was promoted to colonel. In 1871 he went to the province of Puerto Príncipe and followed Major General Ignacio Agramonte . In 1873 he was elected to the Las Villas House of Representatives.
As a result of the resignation of Salvador Cisneros Betancourt , Spotorno succeeded him as interim president of the Republic in Arms on June 29, 1875. On March 21, 1876, he gave up the presidency and returned to the House of Representatives.
After the war he became a member of the Liberal Party and also fought for Cuba's independence in the war of 1895.
