Manuel de Jesús Calvar

Manuel de Jesús "Titá" Calvar y Oduardo (born December 25, 1837 in Manzanillo , Cuba ; † December 20, 1895 in Key West , USA ) was a Cuban major general and one of the leading commanders in the Ten Years' War and President of the Republic in Arms .

Life

Manuel de Jesús Calvar was born the son of a wealthy landowner on December 25, 1837 in Manzanillo, in eastern Cuba. He had a pleasant childhood and attended the local private school. He was later sent to Germany to study accounting and spent several years in Bremen and Hamburg.

On his return to Cuba he took part in the establishment of a Masonic lodge and welcomed the establishment of the Bayamo Revolutionary Committee on August 14, 1867. Calvar participated in the liberation of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes and coordinated the military operations of the Cuban independence struggle. In 1878 he became President of the Republic in Arms.
