Juan Bautista de Espinosa , also Juan de Espinosa (* around 1590 ; † before 1641 in Madrid ) was a Spanish painter of the Spanish Baroque period .

Life

Little is known about his life. He was probably an orphan of humble origins raised by Eugenia de Lievana, sister of the Madrid silversmith Onofre de Espinosa. He married in 1628, the same year as Antonio Ponce , who, like Espinosa, had specialized in still lifes in order to meet the increased demand for such works after the death of Juan van der Hamen y León in 1631. His painting style is related to that of his contemporaries Arellano and Sánchez Cotán. The closeness to Flemish painting could indicate that he received his education in the Spanish Netherlands . Documents prove his work between 1612 and 1626 in Toledo and Madrid .

Juan Bautista de Espinosa also created religious pictures and portraits, but gained his popularity through his still lifes with flowers and fruits. Various wall paintings in Spanish churches are assigned to him. One of the churches is in Alcaudete .

Another Spanish still life painter who worked under an almost identical name ( Juan de Espinosa ) some time after him (roughly between 1645 and 1677) in Madrid, among others, is easy to confuse with him .
