Juan Carlos Zorzi
Juan Carlos Zorzi (* 1936 in Buenos Aires ; † August 21, 1999 there ) was an Argentine composer and conductor.
Zorzi studied at the Conservatorio Municipal and at the Conservatorio National of Buenos Aires with Gilardo Gilardi , Alberto Ginastera , Floro Ugarte and Juan Francisco Giacobbe ; He also took courses in orchestral conducting at the Universidad de La Plata with Mariano Drago . He completed his training with Erwin Leuchter and Teodoro Fuchs . With a scholarship from the Fondo Nacional de las Artes , he finally studied composition and orchestral conducting with Franco Ferrara at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome .
He then worked as a conductor of various well-known orchestras in Latin America: the Orquesta Sinfónica de la Universidad de Cuyo , the Orquesta Sinfónica de Córdoba , the Orquesta Sinfónica de la Universidad de Tucumán , the Sinfónica Nacional and the Filarmónica de Chile . Until 1977 he directed the Orquesta Filarmónica de Bogotá in Colombia and then until 1990 the Orquesta Sinfónica Provincial de Rosario , with which he performed the symphonies of Beethoven , Brahms , Tchaikovsky and Sibelius in concert cycles . In 1992 he became principal guest conductor of the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional .
As a conductor and composer, he has performed several times at the Teatro Colón . 1974-75 he was artistic director of the Teatro Argentino de La Plata . In 1991 his lyrical tragedy Antígona Vélez was premiered at the Teatro Colón . He was awarded the Premio San Francisco Solano in Argentina and the Premio Villa Lobos in Brazil . His student Juan María Solare composed a Nenia per Zorzi after his death .
Zorzi composed, among other things, operas and ballets, orchestral, choral and piano works, instrumental concerts and two requiem.
He died at the age of 63 from cancer of the esophagus.
